On Sunday 30th November 2014 the first game in the Midlands Junior League took place between Church Gresley and Tamworth at Church Gresley IBC.
The game consisted of three rinks of pairs playing 7 ends in a ‘round robin’ format. One point was scored for each end won and the overall winning team scored 5 points.
There is a home and away leg to this competition, with the return match due to be played early next year, date to be confirmed.
The clubs are playing for a trophy kindly donated by Nottingham Bowls shop.
Tamworth won a very close and competitive game collecting the five points.
Kieran and Eleanor, our youngest pair, won two of their matches and lost the third 2 – 5.
Two of the games played by Alice and Eloise were lost by only one point each. The other was a good win for Tamworth.
Jack and Holly won their second game but lost the others.
All the juniors, from both clubs, behaved impeccably, observing the etiquette of the game and were a credit to themselves and all the coaches involved.
It was a friendly and enjoyable experience and we all look forward to the return game.
The Junior World Championships will be taking place at the North Wales Bowls Center (Ffrith IBC, Prestatyn) 2nd – 5th December 2014. For ticket information please contact the Bowls Center on 01745 886100 or WIBC secretary on 01792 538061.

Church Gresley and Carlton Junior Bowls Teams had the spectators on their feet for the nail biting finish to the Junior Challenge Cup. Church Gresley trailed in the competition, played over two legs, by six ends having lost the home leg to Carlton during the summer. At half time Cartlon had increased their lead to ten ends but Church Gresley started to get use to the pace of the away green and pulled back to level pegging in the second half.
With four teams of pairs playing, the lead changed several times and Carlton had regained a two end lead with two teams left to complete their games.
Fourteen year old Ethan Holmes of Church Gresley trailed the jack on the last bowl of their game to take shot and reduce the lead to one.
With only one team still playing Carlton were holding shot and looked like winning the cup. Jack Hart delivered a wonderful bowl under immense pressure to take shot and draw the game. All of the youngsters and parents had a great day and each club will hold the cup for six months. This is the first silverware for Church Gresley Juniors, formed two years ago and with many new and exciting games to come this year hopefully will not be the last.
Steve Haywood who runs the junior section says it is great to see the work put in on training resulting in success for our juniors. We have juniors from 8 years old and they all really enjoy the sport. We have just started a novice league on Tuesday evenings and several of our juniors play in that league with our adult players.
A novice Bowls Drive will be starting on Tuesday 7th October at 6.30 pm.
Although this is aimed at giving our novice bowlers and juniors a chance to play in a friendly relaxed environment it is of course open to all members of the club!
Just turn up at 6.15 for a game.
